Discover the two biggest things you can do starting today to turn back the clock on the arterial plaque, clean out your clogged circulatory system, and get blood flow to your heart, brain, and genitals. (this affects women equally)
Have you heard of the “butter coffee” trend? He’s the guy who has a shelf full of brilliantly conceived and effective supplements, healthy oils, and snack products for people who want to be ageless and mentally sharp.
I traveled to his Bulletproof Alpha Labs on verdant Vancouver Island, Canada, to talk to him about reversing erectile dysfunction from arterial plaque.
Women are as affected as men by a build of plaque in their pelvic arteries. There is as much blood flowing to a woman’s genitals during sex for a man’s penis to become erect.
When you start getting clogged arteries, it affects your ability to enjoy sex no matter what your gender.
Dave is an expert on “mitochondria.” These are the little bacteria batteries that power our cells. And they need energy to power you.
His book, Headstrong is all about how to power your body’s energy cells through a high-fat (good fats, like avocado oil, nuts, seeds, sustainable fish, and organic meats his Brain Octane oil made from the Caprylic Acid (C8) coconut oil that raises fat-burning, brain-fueling molecules in your body called ketones.
The C8 in Brain Octane oil has potent anti-microbial properties to help you maintain a healthy gut, and it is the fastest to metabolize in the brain. Your brain is made of fat, mostly cholesterol. Your sex hormones are also made of fat.
So if you generally eat low fat, high carbs, high sugar with the occasional fried foods, and fast foods, you are draining your batteries and clogging your arteries.
Moving to a “good fats” diet, which includes Brain Octane oil, means your liver does not need to process this rare type of MCT (medium-chain triglyceride fat or C8), and it only takes 3 steps for your body to turn it into ATP, the cellular fuel you use. Sugar takes 26 steps.
Getting off sugar and bad fats from fried and processed foods will reverse arterial plaque.
In this important video, Dave and I talk about the two biggest things you can do starting today to turn back the clock on the arterial plaque, clean out your clogged circulatory system and get blood flow to your heart, brain, and genitals.
[Susan] I’m Susan Bratton, your trusted hot sex adviser, and I’m with my friend Dave Asprey of Bulletproof. I’m at Bulletproof labs, the Alpha labs on Vancouver Island in Canada, where Dave has amazing machines and biohacking equipment.
He’s the inventor of the concept of biohacking, and this is his latest book: HEADSTRONG, which is a New York Times bestseller. It’s about your mitochondria, the batteries in your cells that give you the energy and the vitality for life.
I wanted to talk to Dave a bit about how your mitochondria affect your sex life. If you followed me for any amount of time, you know that I am a proponent of engorgement, bringing blood flow to your genitals. My position is that everyone knows that a man’s penis needs to get hard to feel good, but not enough people understand that a woman’s genitals have the same amount of erectile tissue as a man’s penis. If she hasn’t allowed herself to have good blood flow, she’s missing out on an incredible amount of sensation, pleasure, and orgasmic potential.
I wanted to get to the root of circulation as it relates to our mitochondria. You have some excellent advice about getting more pleasure from sex by understanding how to manage your mitochondrial energy.
[Dave] You have a quadrillion mitochondria in your body hundred trillion cells. So more of these little ancient bacteria that became our power plants than anything else. They make sure they reproduce, so they’re driving the power for you to have sex. They also are involved in creating the electron flow that pumps your heart, makes you breathe, think, and even feel. Mitochondria are integrally tied to your nervous system. If you have dysfunctional mitochondria, your nerves’ ability to function doesn’t work well. The ability to get blood flow where you need it to be doesn’t work either.
Mitochondria create nitric oxide, a gas present only for a few seconds in the body. We didn’t know it existed for years until we had these very delicate abilities to measure what’s happening inside the body. The cool thing is more nitric oxide equals better blood flow. You can do simple things, like staying hydrated, so you have more water in your blood and making sure that you do something that enhances blood flow. You can go for a walk every day for 20 minutes.
[Susan] In HEADSTRONG, I read about a program designed to get you more energy, improve blood flow, and give you the power to have a powerful sexual experience instead of “I’m too tired.”
[Dave] Do that 20-minute walk every day, and once a week, do something strenuous for a few minutes. High-intensity intervals mean you sprint for 90 seconds and lay your back and pant like you’re about to die because that’s how it feels. Please do it again a couple of times, and you’ve finished for the week, or lift heavy things like squats and bench presses and pull-ups. Do that for 15 minutes, and you’ve finished for the week. You might do it twice if you want to get in great shape, but it’s unnecessary to do a lot.
There are two different bodies of evidence that shows this is what causes those mitochondria to get stronger. The stronger they are, the better you’re going to be, but you want to have good blood flow.
Eat your organic veggies. Put butter all over them. It comes down to a plate covered in vegetables in the Bulletproof diet. In Headstrong, I talked about the importance of these vegetables, the colored compounds in the vegetables, and what they do for blood fill is essential. Certain vegetables like beets can increase nitric oxide levels.
Even bacon can do that as long as it isn’t burnt and cooked at high temperatures. However, it needs to come from organic pigs and has to be cooked gently. If you do that, you can get extra nitric oxide from the compounds in the bacon. That’s said, if anyone ate deep-fried crappy crispy bacon, you’re probably going to have worse blood flow, not better. You won’t do well if you’re eating a high-fat diet consisting of fats fried, and soybean or canola oil.
The deal is a moderate protein, super large amounts of vegetables, and enough fat, which can often be 40, 50, or even 80 percent of calories of the right lubricant. This facilitates hormone production. If you’re doing enough veggies, you’re going to get the blood flow.
[Susan] It comes down to exercise and blood flow. I heard Dr. Amy B. Killen speak at the Bulletproof conference. She said that erectile dysfunction is the early warning sign for heart disease and stroke because the plaque in your arteries makes it difficult for the blood to flow in and out of the veins of the penis. Whenever I talk about the penis, I’m thinking at the same time about the clitoral structure and the genital erectile tissue that a woman has.
Just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean this isn’t affecting you. It’s just not as apparent to you. If you notice arterial sclerosis or artery plaque or the beginning of erectile dysfunction, have trouble getting or keeping it up, what can you do to return to original health?
Many people think butter or fat causes plaque in your arteries. If they did some research, they’d find that the arteries’ plaque comes from bacteria and not from your diet. A history of people getting more heart attacks as the American Heart Association tells us to eat less fat. They will say to you cholesterol in food is “a nutrient of non-concern.”
They’re saying they were wrong. Eating eggs, for instance, is acceptable. Your brain consists of cholesterol so it isn’t bad. You need it for brain function, and your hormones are all made out of it, so it’s essential. If you’re on a low-fat diet or a vegan diet, you should expect to have erectile dysfunction. However, if you’re eating a crappy diet that causes high amounts of inflammation, you’ll feel better on a vegan diet because you’re eating your vegetables, at least, which is essential. You need to be on a proper diet, a plate of veggies, healthy saturated fat, and a moderate amount of organic or grass-fed fish or beef or other protein.
[Susan] It’s not a high-protein diet. It’s a moderate to low protein diet. You will find is that you can, for years, sustain proper blood flow in the body. If you cut the veggies out, you will get the wrong vector in the gut, leading to plaque. If you’re on a high-sugar diet, eating lots of things like high fructose corn syrup, lots of additives, you should expect to have problems with your blood flow as well.
A big part of sex is about blood flow. A big part of blood flow is getting the energy to the right places. If you want to learn more about what to eat, buy Dave’s book. It’s called HEADSTRONG. It’s excellent. I have many copies myself, and thank you so much, Dave. I appreciate being in your studio and have the opportunity to talk about being Headstrong.
