Both men and women can improve their quality of life by keeping their hormones balanced throughout their lives.

Expect to tweak your hormone replacement plan as you age — by staying up with the latest information from the functional and natural medical research community — which is what I’m sharing here.

Dr. Wilcox specializes in complex health issues that other doctors have not been able to solve. So I’ve put his contact info in the notes below.

Most doctors order a blood test for your hormones. Dr. Wilcox recommends a live blood analysis through his clinic and a 24-hour urine hormone test, and a four-point dried urine cortisol test through Meridian Valley Labs.

Here’s what these tests look like:

Dr. Glenn says a shocking number of people have an underlying bacterial infection or parasites in their intestinal tract that, if not treated, will render the hormone replacement less effective. So he also suggests a stool test to check for those.

In her book, Sexy Brain (see link below), Dr. Devaki Lindsey Berkson recommends testing for:

• Estrogens (estradiol, estrone, estriol)
• Free and Total Testosterone
• Progesterone
• Pregnenolone
• Luteinizing Hormone
• FSH (women)
• DHEA
• Cortisol (the same 4-point 24-hour saliva test Dr. Wilcox uses)
• Fasting Insulin
• Vitamin D (actually a hormone, not a vitamin)
• And a Thyroid Panel (Free T3, free T4, T3 uptake, reverse T3, TSH, TBG, as well as thyroid antibodies)

She also says women will have better sexual desire and enjoyment when their total testosterone is around 30 to 100 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter) in the blood. Most men feel better with levels at about 700 to 800, if not closer to 1000.

A woman’s blood estradiol level should be 60 pg/mL (picograms per milliliter) if not closer to 100L, and her progesterone should be above 10 ng/mL. Some women feel better if their estradiol is higher, closer to 125 or 130. Dr. Berkson emphasizes that it’s all individual, and you should FEEL good on the right dose for you.

You can get all the measurements in Dr. Lindsey’s book at SexyBrainSystems.com.

Many hormone doctors prescribe estrogen for women without also balancing their progesterone and testosterone. Progesterone can help a woman sleep well.

Often as women age, they get “afraid” of things. This comes in large part from the lowering of testosterone as we grow older. When you reach your forties, you produce half the hormones you did in your twenties. Dr. Berkson says this is why you start to feel unsure, overwhelmed, and maybe more cautious before taking action. Some women even start struggling with anxiety.

“The more our testosterone levels are optimal, the less overwhelmed and frail we feel,” says Dr. Berkson. Supplementing with a bit of testosterone can help a woman feel less anxious and more confident.

In addition to more vitality, supplementing your hormones can also improve your memory and cognition or brainpower…

Your mitochondria are the essence of your energy. They are the little batteries that run your body. Your hippocampus, which controls your memory, your motivation, and your sense of self, has the highest density of mitochondria in your body.

And as Dr. Lindsey says, your hippocampus “eats” testosterone and estrogen signals for food. If your hippocampus has shrunk, you can re-volumize it with HRT. Feeding your hippocampus with enough hormones will keep you feeling like yourself and making new trysts with life.

Testosterone and Estrogen protect your brain function so completely that it is the “significant reduction of these hormone levels in middle age that literally “initiates” dementia, Alzheimer’s and depression as well as sexual desire and enjoyment.”

If that isn’t enough to motivate you to have your hormone levels tested, your hippocampus may be too “shrunken” even to take action. Talk to your doctor about helping you supplement your hormones as a way of getting your vitality back.
